The Carving

The Carving

From untamed driftwood,
a lion’s mane unblurs itself;

next the face takes shape, blind,
and unexpected;

unknown the future lies before us,
an artwork undiscovered.

Something like a lion’s jaw
takes hold of the knife,

begins to carve out hidden shapes,
beauty unforeseen. And yet,

something else unclenches.
We must learn this letting go

until, unafraid, we can allow that blade
to guide us toward the wild,

the unknown within.
